almost none.
Which cookies this site uses, what each category is for, and how to change your mind. Short, because the honest answer is that almost nothing here sets one.
The short version
Advertising is the only thing on this site that sets cookies, and it only runs on the journal. Every other page of the site sets none at all.
There is no cookie that tracks you for our benefit — no first-party analytics cookie, no session cookie, no login. If you never open a journal article, no cookie is ever written by this site.
Strictly necessary
None. There is no account system, no basket and no server-side session, so there is nothing this site needs to remember about you in order to work.
Your consent choice itself is stored by the consent platform so that you are not asked on every page. That record is what makes the choice meaningful, and it cannot be switched off without discarding your decision.
Functional — and why these are not cookies
Two small preferences are kept, and both live in your browser's own local storage rather than in a cookie. Neither is ever transmitted to this site or anywhere else, and neither can be read by another website:
- Your light or dark theme choice, so the site does not change appearance every time you arrive.
- A flag recording that you have already seen the loading animation once in this tab, so it is not replayed on every page.
Analytics
Page statistics come from Plausible Analytics, which is cookieless by design. It counts visits and which pages are read; it does not set a cookie, does not assign you an identifier, and cannot follow you to any other site.
Because it stores nothing on your device and cannot identify you, there is nothing here for you to consent to or opt out of. If that ever changes — if a provider that does use cookies is added — it will be listed here and placed behind consent first.
Advertising
Journal pages carry advertising served by Google AdSense. Google and its partners may set cookies, or read cookies already on your device, to select ads and measure whether they were seen or clicked. Where you have consented, those ads may be personalised using your browsing history.
This processing is Google's, under Google's terms, and the data does not come back to this site. Consent for it is collected and stored by Google's certified consent management platform.
If you decline, the journal still works exactly as before — you may simply see less relevant advertising.
Changing your mind
There is a Cookie preferences link in the footer of every page. It reopens the same dialog you saw on your first visit, with your current choices already selected, and a change takes effect immediately.
You can also clear or block cookies in your browser settings, and turn off ad personalisation across all of Google's services in your Google Ads Settings. Nothing on this site is withheld from you for doing either.
When this page changes
If a new cookie or a new provider is introduced, this page is updated and — where the change affects what you agreed to — you will be asked to confirm your choices again rather than having a new purpose added silently to an old consent.
